Monitek was formed in 1988 by John Edgar and John McRae to apply technologies they had developed at Bougainville Copper to the Australian mining industry.

The company began as a condition monitoring consultancy with a focus on Vibration Analysis, Ferrography and Training.   Over the last 15 years, the Company has grown to the extent that it now operates strongly in Australia.

Our first office was in Brisbane, sited in between the 2 major areas for open cut coal mines in Australia, the Bowen Basin and the Hunter Valley.  The vibration monitoring system initially used comprised Brüel & Kjær 4 channel FM tape recorders, Bruel & Kjaer High Resolution Signal Analysers and VCM software, a proprietary package running on a Digital VAX computer.

The first condition monitoring contracts were at coal washeries, but soon we targeted the many expensive draglines which were operating in the open cut coal mines with no condition monitoring.  This was because these machines operated at variable speed and load which was not amenable to the conventional frequency analysis technique.  With the addition of a Bruel & Kjaer Tracking Filter, an optical tachometer and some software modifications we began monitoring draglines using Order Analysis.

Our first High Frequency Resonance Demodulation system was developed at about the same time for advanced bearing fault detection, ahead of anything commercially available in the instrument market.  With these two systems Monitek was the technical market leader, able to monitor drives on draglines and rope shovels with the same accuracy as on fixed speed equipment.  Within two years Monitek was monitoring 85% of the dragline fleet.

During the early years the mining industry was still learning about new maintenance philosophies such as RCM and Monitek played a part in their education by running courses in condition monitoring and maintenance management.

Monitek has since expanded in many directions including underground coal mines, on-site offices, multiple branch offices, international branches and total managed contracts.  In the equipment area we have added portable data collectors, digital tape recorders, in-house development of software and hardware, and PC based recording and analysis in lieu of dedicated instrumentation.
